3 Witches and Dragon Soup - Free Story for Kids

Three witches were getting ready to make a delicious cauldron of soup. But, not just any soup. They were making dragon soup.

The witches added boiling water, colorful carrots, lemony leeks, delicious dates, and assorted spices. But try as they might, the witches were missing one important ingredient.

They were missing a dragon!

The dragon cauldron was singing a lonely, wistful song. And that was when the dragon appeared - her head in the clouds, her tail in flames, and her wings menacing the wind.

The dragon was a pale blue dragon and was the scariest looking, most dangerous looking dragon in the world. But the dragons were wary of the witches, and if they came too close, she breathed fire and stopped them in their tracks. Her breath was so hot that it melted snow and ice, and made even the sand at her feet become cold.

The witch with red hair and a pointy nose saw her.

'We need your help,' she said, 'to make a fine dragon soup. Because it's so long, I'll wait until you get your breath back. You can just call me, Pomona, and this is my sister, Macrina,'

The blue dragon shook her head from side to side. Her fiery breath nearly filled the room, but she wasn't angry. She was just bewildered at being asked for help.

So impressed, Pomona and Macrina asked, 'Are you a dragon?'

The blue dragon made a sound - a croaking, crooning noise that sounded like a big fat frog. 'My mother was very sad when they told her I was a dragon,' she said and looked around the room.

Pomona rubbed noses with her sister. 'Mother was sad, but then I told her you might consider it if you had to live on a diet of crumbs, except we can do with something more substantial. So she was delighted, and so we need to use the parts of you we need to make soup. All we really want to use is wings and tail,'

The blue dragon shook her head again, this time from side to side. 'Well, I have no idea, I am scared by this,' she said, 'but I will try.' She offered them another croaking croak.

'That's brilliant, the nose chose you so you must be really special,' said Macrina. She was sitting on a huge feathery purple cushion. She had a peace of cake and a piece of bread and she was eating both together.

'I will go back to my cave and think about it,' said the blue dragon and she left. And the next day, she was back and as creepy as ever.

'I have come to help you,' she said. When she bowed her head, her tail touched the ground.

'That's marvelous!' Pomona said.
